Nexus – Form

logo

Nexus was a team project in which members (Gina Rawlings, Mark Owbridge, Lisa Howell, Mauricio Vera Johannesen, Jason Woods, Andrew Porter, Sean Antrobus, Jamie Mayne) were challenged to create a printer that generated 3D form. Initially inspired by amphibian eggs, the intention of Nexus was to create a unique aesthetic that involved the connecting of gelatin bubbles.

The result offers new potentials in Industrial Design and Architecture. Victoria Universities Design Led Futures Programme allowed Jamie Mayne and Gina Rawlings to further explore the aesthetic and materiality in the team BeingHuman.

This simple yet intricate form was created digitally on a 3D model making programme called Solidworks. It was then ‘grown’ using the process of stereolithography (more commonly known as rapid prototying).  Stereolithography is an additive manufacturing process using a vat of liquid UV curable resin and a UV laser to build parts one layer at a time. Once ‘printed’ and extracted from its support material this form starts to take on life-like qualities. It curls up in the sun and dances in the wind, it has markings not to different from our own skin.
