The emergence of new types of solar panel technology offers potential for the designer to integrate this technology into truly appealing and influential design. Through ‘Ivy’ , jamie investigates fluid or organic form and its integration with ‘solar film’, a newly developed, cheaper and more efficient solar panel. Inspired by organic and plant-like structures, ‘ivy’ consists of a number of modular components which join together by magnets and create a long strand or ‘vine’.
These components are flexible and contain solar panels which absorb sunlight, allowing ‘ivy’ to glow in the dark. The solar panels charge a battery which powers LED’s embedded in the component. ‘Ivy’ aims to encourage society to think about alternative energy by giving people sustainable lighting that can be manipulated and enjoyed. The beauty lies in the fact that the components are constantly glowing yet not wasting any power or resources acquired from the earth.
